Dear FiftyAndFurthermores,

As I looked out the window from my office this morning and watched the kids get on the bus for the first time in two months; I began to accept the inevitable. Summer is over, unofficially at least. But things are still heating up at FiftyAndFurthermore.com. Here’s what’s in store for this week’s ezine: August was a month filled with many intriguing news stories that inspired Dr. Lynn to write. Check out her blog on the Edwards’ Affair (click here) and also an article (see below) about marriage and affairs from a psychologist’s point of view. If you are heading to a family reunion this Labor Day, don't miss Rebecca Martorella’s article. Looking to travel this fall? Mira Temkin offers a hidden gem - Antigua (and it’s not the Antigua you’re thinking about). And as the cool Autumn winds bring us indoors, it’s a great time to pick up a new hobby like dancing, says Eileen Kisailus. If September has you dreaming of change in the form of a new job, check out Roberta Chinsky Matuson’s article.

Happy Labor Day,

Jim DeMicco, Webmaster

Almost every marriage hits a point in the relationship when one of the partners develops a wandering eye. The wandering eye can be fun, if that's all that it is. When the married partner goes beyond innocent flirtation or appreciative glances, the spouse can put themselves at risk. If he/she starts feeling a real sense of desire, or actually acts upon their lust, then an affair can crack the foundation of the marriage. Secrets enter the couple's lives and the marriages can be heading down a difficult road. . .

I am headed to a family reunion. It’s a tradition that began as a celebration of my grandparents’ 50th anniversary in 1971 and is still held by my father’s family every five years despite the passing of my grandparents in the 1990’s (they were together for an amazing 70 years).

The family is a big one, starting with nine siblings and expanding exponentially over 85 years. When I was young, my aunts and uncles ran the reunions, and most of the 26 cousins went. . .

When I told a girlfriend I was going to Antigua, she thought I meant an island in the Caribbean.

“No,” I said, “this Antigua is a 16th century, Spanish colonial city in Guatemala.”

What I discovered was that this well-preserved town is one that time forgot, filled with enchanting ruins, coffee plantations and a cornucopia of culture. Although I only spent a few days in Antigua, there are many reasons to return. . .

About 10 years ago, a friend of mind introduced me to ballroom dancing in the hope that it would help me through a difficult time in my life. I had recently suffered the death of my fiancé, and I was devastated. Since she and I had our hay-day during the disco era and never lost our love of dance, she thought she would share her new-found passion with me. I always tell people that ballroom dancing saved my life. It was fun, safe, social and a great way to burn off the calories. I dropped 25 pounds. . .

Forty may be the new fifty but not if you are job searching. We have laws to protect us from age discrimination in the workplace but in reality discrimination occurs daily. Don’t be discouraged. You can improve your chances of breaking through the age barrier and landing a fulfilling job by following these tips.

Take inventory of your skills

If you have been at home raising children or taking care of an aging parent you may think you have little to offer employers. . .
