Growing Up vs. Growing Old
With more than 78 million Baby Boomers emerging into the latter years of their lives, it is no surprise that we see so many grannies dressing like tweens and older men choosing to dress like retired ball players rather than geriatric shuffle-boarders. And why should they? Just look around! Thanks to Cher’s pioneering efforts, we don’t have to grow old anymore, or we don’t have to look like we are. Truth is, our bodies age, not our spirits.
The idea that people should dress their age has become a rule of the past. In recent years, baby boomers, and even younger professionals have adopted the mentality that it’s appropriate to dress comfortable and in a manner that represents your personality. If you’re over 50 and can still work a dance-floor in high heels, by all means, “Work it, girl!” And gentlemen, you don’t have to hike your pants above your navel just because you’re over the hill, just don’t let them hang past your waist or you risk being mistaken for your grandson.
People should feel encouraged to be themselves at any age. You should dress how you want to dress, wear your hair the way you like it, and empower yourself in ways that make your soul happy. Whether you’re living a long and adventurous life, or have lived many adventurous lives, facing the last years of whichever path you chose to take can be daunting. That’s not to say you shouldn’t continue to express your joyfulness and exuberance with any less effort or intention than you have in the past.
While our bodies may outgrow our abilities (and sometimes our desires) to lead healthy sexual relationships, our minds and spirits open up to allow for opportunities of sensual experiences. Sex isn’t just about penetration, it’s about love and kindness. It’s a kiss in the morning, an unexpected slow dance in the kitchen after dinner, or locking eyes with your lover across a crowded room. Most times, exploring heightened levels of sensuality between you and your partner can make you feel like a kid again…because you can’t fight growing old, but you never have to grow up.
